Meares Island "Big Tree Trail"

Meares Island - the gateway to the old-growth temperate rainforest of Clayoqout Sound. Gracing the view from Tofino, Meares Island invites visitors to discover its ancient secrets.

A short water taxi trip by open-air Zodiac through the harbour islands, connects you to the Tribal Park of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations and the 'Big Tree Trail'. This 1 ½ hour experience allows you to walk among the old-growth trees on a hand crafted boardwalk.

Along the boardwalk there are magnificent old-growth trees up to 1600 years old. Meares Island is a living example of a true west coast forest with giant Cedar, Spruce and Hemlock trees underlain with an undergrowth of salal bushes, moss and ferns.

To prepare for this adventure wear wind jacket, long pants, regular walking shoes, hat and sunglasses. Life jackets issued prior to departure. Rainforest information sheet (with map) provided for each party. Boat trip each way approximately 10 minutes.
